Lawn Aeration & Verticutting with Over-Seeding
If you want your lawn to be as healthy and vibrant as possible, aeration, seeding and verticutting are areas that you should not overlook.
Aeration in the Spring and/or Fall is a good rule of thumb. Spring aeration will allow oxygen and nutrients to more easily reach down deep to the roots of the grass. You should aerate every 1-2 years. If you have kids or big dogs running on the grass quite often then I recommend every year for sure.
In the Fall we over-seed, verticut and fertilize starting the last week of August. This allows a good amount of time for the grass to establish and grow roots deep enough to withstand the first freeze – usually around Halloween. If you have weeds or invasive ground violet, you will be better off if you get the weeds controlled before you plant seed. You may even want to consider killing everything off with RoundUp ahead of time.
